Spam Musubi: A Taste of Hawaii

Spam Musubi is a popular Hawaiian snack or light meal that combines salty spam, savory rice, and a sheet of roasted seaweed (nori) for a delightful handheld treat. It's a delicious and easy-to-make option, perfect for busy mornings, picnics, or a quick bite.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (14 oz) Spam Classic
  • 2 cups cooked sushi rice
  • Furikake seasoning (optional)
  • 1 sheet toasted nori seaweed, cut in half (optional)
  • Soy sauce, for glazing (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Rice: Prepare 2 cups of sushi rice according to package instructions. You can use a rice cooker or a stovetop method. While the rice cooks, you can also toast the nori seaweed if using. To toast the nori, simply hold it briefly over an open flame (gas stove burner or lighter) until it changes color slightly and becomes more fragrant. Be careful not to burn it.

  2. Prepare the Spam: Slice the Spam can into 1/4-inch thick slices. You can cut them into squares or triangles, depending on your preference.

  3. Optional Seasoning: You can brush the Spam slices with a little soy sauce for added flavor before frying (optional).

  4. Fry the Spam: Heat enough vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the Spam slices for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  5. Assemble the Musubi: If using a mold: Wet a handheld musubi maker or a mold (similar to a bento box mold) with water to prevent sticking. Fill the mold with a compact layer of cooked sushi rice. Sprinkle some furikake seasoning on the rice if desired (optional). Top the rice layer with a fried Spam slice. Press down gently to form a compact unit. Remove the musubi from the mold and wrap it entirely with a half sheet of toasted nori, shiny side down. Secure the nori with a piece of plastic wrap or a strip of seaweed (optional).

If not using a mold: Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking. Take a portion of the cooked rice (about 2-3 tablespoons) and gently form it into a rectangular or triangular shape in your palm. Place a fried Spam slice on top of the rice. Wrap the entire creation with a half sheet of toasted nori, shiny side down, securing it with a piece of plastic wrap or a strip of seaweed (optional).

  6. Serve and Enjoy! Cut the assembled musubi in half and enjoy it as is or with a drizzle of soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.

Tips:

  • If you don't have a musubi mold, you can simply form the rice by hand. Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking.
  • You can find furikake seasoning in most Asian grocery stores. It's a blend of seaweed, sesame seeds, and other savory ingredients that adds extra flavor to the rice.
  • Leftover Spam Musubi can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. However, the seaweed may lose some of its crispness.

Spam Musubi is a delicious and convenient way to enjoy the flavors of Hawaii. It's a fun snack, light lunch, or even a creative appetizer. So next time you're looking for something easy and satisfying, give Spam Musubi a try!
